Earthshine

                 seen from the moon …

We regard the slow strafing
of the stars, record their blind sailing
high across the dome of larger dark;
reflect on the reflections of the lights
that drift off past the final spark
to where all prophecy
and measurement collapses.

O world among lost rocky worlds,
reef in the waterless ocean,
provider of the sad account
of how we swallowed everything,
what have we done wrong but eat you?
Blue apple long fallen from the tree
we cannot comprehend,
its branches blanched and stubbled,
its windfall of worlds, stem end over
blossom end, falling one by one
into nothing.

Earthshine is scheduled to be archived on the Moon as part of the Lunar Codex mission.
